Proud’ – Oxford Languages Dictionary

Here’s the third of three ‘It’s Okay to be…’ Thursday Thoughts.

The 1st two were, It’s Okay to Let Things Brew and It’s Okay to Pause, and now, ‘It’s Okay to be Proud’.

‘It’s Okay to Be Proud’

What’s in a Word?

The word ‘proud’ can mean different things and evoke mixed feelings. So just to be clear/make sure we’re on the same page, when using the word proud in this post, I’m going with the 1st definition.

adjective

  1. feeling deep pleasure or satisfaction as a result of one’s own achievements, qualities, or possessions or those of someone with whom one is closely associated.

Despite there being positive meanings to the word, it can often be viewed through a negative lens or be associated with being egotistical.

In society, there’s generally an accepted understanding that we, ‘should not think too highly of ourselves’. However, it can be conflated to mean that even when praise is due, we deny it to others and ourselves.

We shouldn’t do this, as there are times and reasons for which ‘it is okay to be proud.’

Proud Inventory

I mention this in the video, so thought it would be useful to also share it here in written form.

I have based this on the concept of an app, ‘Proud‘, that one of my cousins was developing. The primary premise of which is, to get you to answer one question:

What have you done today?

I borrowed the premise of this question and added two extensions of it.

Proud Inventory How-to:
  • Note down the things you have done during the day (daily)
  • Note down the things that you did well/felt good about during a meeting, presentation, project, assignment etc, (immediately or ASAP after completion)
  • Note down your personal and professional achievements (monthly or quarterly)

I first shared about the ‘Proud Inventory’ in, Tell Them to Shut Up.
